If you are visiting Egypt for the first time, going out into the bustling city of Cairo might seem a bit daunting. The pressure to go on guided tours and stay with groups of other tourists can be a bit overwhelming. That's why I created this handy list of cool things to do in the area this month that won't be in any brochure.
Don't completely skip out on the conventional tourist spots, though. Seeing the pyramids and exploring Khan il Khalili are definite musts. But if you want experience a true taste of Egypt, you'll have to go off the beaten path and chill like a local.
Mohamed Ali
Live Concert
When: Sept. 19th at 7 PM
Where: Beshtak Palace
Performing since the age of five, Mohamed Ali is an up-and-coming Egyptian singer and composer. Along with his group of musicians known as Byanola Band, he will be taking to the stage at the ornate concert hall at Beshtak Palace. Be sure to stop by for the best oriental music in Cairo.

Mango Festival

Where: Rehab City's Family Park
If you're craving something sweet and juicy, head over to the nation's first mango festival! Farmers from all across Egypt will be coming together to offer patrons a wide variety of mangos and mango products including jams, juice, pulp, chutney, and more. There will even be a mango-eating contest that you can sign-up for.

Osana Market
Farmer’s Market
When: Sept 13 from 11 AM to 3 PM
Where: 4 El Nady Street, Maadi
Hosted by Osana Family Wellness, this farmer's market is perfect for tourists who want experience a taste of the Egyptian countryside. The event will showcase fresh produce, homemade food, and locally made products.
Movement Course
Dance Class
When: Sept 15 from 8:30 PM - 10 PM
If you feel stiff from travel or you've eaten way too much koshary, you can stop by the Cairo Contemporary Dance Center in Mohandesin for a Movement Course taught by
Ahmed Azmy. If you can't make it there on the 15th, don't worry! This dance class is offered every Sunday.

Museum of Tanta
Reopening
When: Open Daily from 8 AM - 2 PM, Closed Fridays
Where: Tanta, Egypt
Built in 1913 and finally reopening after 18 years, the Museum of Tanta currently showcases over 8,500 artifacts from the Pharaonic, Roman, and Greek eras. The Ministry of Antiquities undertook this massive renovation project to reopen the five-story building with two new exhibits. It's about 2 hours from the heart of Cairo, but it's well worth the drive. Visitors can view the Virgin Mary, the god Osiris, and even Imhotep, the ancient Egyptian architect responsible for constructing the famous Step Pyramid.
Princess Fawzia Exhibit
Exhibition Showcase
When: July 3 - October 31 from 9 AM to 3 PM
Where: AUC, New Cairo
The Rare Books and Special Collections Library at the American University in Cairo is holding a special showcase to honor Princess Fawzia. 'The Duality of Egyptian Womanhood Through Western and Egyptian Eyes' explores how women in Egypt have been perceived by the media.

‘Desert Visage’ Exhibit

When: Sept 15 - 28 from 7 PM - 9 PM
Where: Picasso Gallery, Zamalek
Displaying the latest works of Wael Abed, Picasso Gallery will be featuring the 'Desert Visage' photo exhibition. Established back in 1970, the gallery hosts many local artists and photographers throughout the year. Located in Zamalek, it's a great venue for tourists to experience fine art and local culture.
Cirque du Soleil Bazzar

Where: Hyde Park, New Cairo

Where: ROOM Art Space, Garden City
If you're ready to throw caution to the wind and let your hair down, be sure to hit up Karaoke Night at ROOM Art Space in Garden City. You're on vacation in Egypt! No one knows you. You can sing like a sick donkey and not have to worry!
